AI SIX Podcast Episode 483: Abu Dhabi’s AI Courts

By

Abu Dhabi’s AI Courts initiative is one of the most significant developments in public sector AI I’ve covered on this podcast. Abu Dhabi has announced plans for the world’s first fully integrated AI-powered judicial platform — and it raises some big questions about the future of justice, fairness, and human oversight.

What Is Abu Dhabi’s AI Judicial Platform?

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, working with the Department of Government Enablement, is developing an AI judicial platform designed to support the justice system from the opening of a case right through to its conclusion. The first phase is expected to begin in September 2026, with a phased rollout over 18 months after that.

Officials say it will bring smart, AI-enabled tools into judicial workflows to help modernise procedures, improve efficiency and strengthen the quality and consistency of judicial work. And crucially — at least as stated — it will operate under full human supervision and validation.

Why This Matters for Public Sector Professionals

Courts aren’t just administrative offices. They resolve disputes, uphold rights, impose penalties and make decisions that can affect someone’s family, finances, liberty, reputation and future. So the stakes here couldn’t be higher.

The question isn’t simply whether AI can make justice faster. The more important question is whether it can do so without weakening fairness, due process or judicial independence. That’s the tension at the heart of this initiative — and it’s one every public sector leader deploying AI should be thinking about.

What Makes This Different From Existing Legal AI?

AI isn’t entirely new to courts. Legal professionals already use digital tools for:

  • Case management and administration
  • Transcription and document processing
  • Legal research and database searching
  • Document review and summarisation

What makes Abu Dhabi’s proposal distinctive is its ambition to integrate AI more deeply across the entire judicial workflow — not just as a standalone research tool or chatbot. That’s a meaningful shift.

The Potential Benefits

If designed well, this kind of platform could genuinely help. AI could reduce repetitive administrative work for court staff, help legal professionals organise large volumes of documents, flag procedural issues earlier, and give citizens clearer information and faster service.

Counsellor Yousef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, said the initiative reflects a wider UAE ambition to use future technologies to improve government services and advance the judicial system in line with high international standards.

The Non-Negotiables: Human Oversight and Accountability

The announced model is AI assistance — not AI acting as an independent judicial authority. The human decision-maker must remain accountable for the process and for any final ruling. That framing matters. It’s the right framing. But how that accountability is maintained in practice, as the system scales and becomes more embedded, will be the real test.

For anyone working in public sector communications or policy, this is a case study worth watching closely. How Abu Dhabi navigates transparency, public trust and judicial independence as this platform rolls out will set a precedent — whether they intend it to or not.
