When disaster strikes, every second counts. What if AI could predict, respond, and even save lives faster than ever before?
Hello and welcome to the AI Six Podcast. Today, I’m exploring how AI is transforming crisis response. From predicting natural disasters to optimising emergency relief, AI is helping governments and aid agencies act faster and more effectively.
As extreme weather events, pandemics, and humanitarian crises increase, AI is becoming a critical tool.
Devanand Ramiah, is the Director of Crisis Readiness, Response and Recovery at the UN Development Programme. He says of AI:
“At the UNDP we are leveraging these tools to ensure faster and smarter support for people impacted by crisis.”
So, let’s dive into five key ways AI is making a difference to agencies’ work.
1️. Predicting Disasters Before They Happen
AI’s early warning systems analyse seismic data, satellite imagery, and weather patterns to predict floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.
Example: Google’s AI-powered Flood Hub predicts floods days in advance, helping communities prepare and evacuate if necessary.
2. Mapping Disaster Zones in Real-Time
After a disaster hits, AI processes drone and satellite images to map the damage. This helps first responders quickly assess where help is needed most.
Example: The World Food Programme uses AI to evaluate disaster zones and deliver aid faster.
3. Optimising Emergency Relief Efforts
AI analyses real-time data from social media, sensors, and satellites to guide resource allocation. This ensures that food, water, and medical aid reach the hardest-hit areas.
Example: UNDP’s AI tools improve the speed and accuracy of emergency relief efforts.
4. Fighting Misinformation During Crises
In emergencies, misinformation spreads quickly. AI-powered fact-checking tools scan social media to detect and flag false news in real-time.
Example: Organisations like Logically employ AI to analyse vast amounts of online content, identifying and flagging misinformation during emergencies. Their AI-driven platform assesses the credibility of information by cross-referencing it with verified data, helping to prevent the spread of false narratives that could mislead the public during critical times.
5. AI-Powered Chatbots Provide Instant Info
AI chatbots offer real-time information to affected populations, helping them find shelter, food, and medical care.
Example: The Red Cross’ chatbot on WhatsApp delivers life-saving information during disasters.
Why This Matters for Marketers
Clear communication saves lives. In crisis situations, public sector marketers play a key role in sharing accurate, timely information. AI tools can enhance that effort by automating social media monitoring, improving audience targeting, and combating misinformation.
If you’re working in government, emergency services, or social impact marketing, AI can make your job easier—and more effective.
