AI Six Podcast Episode 25: AI in the Public Sector: The Big Opportunity

By

AI is transforming every industry, but what about the public sector? Governments have a massive opportunity to improve efficiency, automate processes, and improve citizen engagement, yet adoption remains slow. Why? Mainly because they are conservative and more considered than the private sector. Because getting it wrong, has a greater impact.

Today, I’m reviewing a major report on AI and the public sector. The study, commissioned by Google Cloud and conducted by Public First, highlights the impact AI could have on the UK public sector. So if you are working in any public sector agency this will interest you.

If you’re not, you can still learn something!

But first here’s former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s perspective. He believes supercharging the public sector with AI can bridge the gap between public concerns and the potential of AI. He was quoted during a Google Cloud panel discussion.

Public services under pressure

There isn’t a day that goes by that a public sector agency (in any country) is not in the news, because of wasteful spending, poor public engagement, or failed policies. Now stick with me, this isn’t an episode of public sector bashing, to the contrary.

The point I am making is that the public sector faces significant challenges, including budget constraints, staffing shortages, and growing waiting lists. They are constantly under media and public scrutiny to be better and deliver better public services.

According to this report, ‘AI & the Public Sector’, AI is seen as a potential solution to these issues by improving efficiency and service delivery.

Report insights

⏳ The £38 Billion Opportunity
AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a game-changer. By 2030, generative AI could save the UK public sector £38 billion a year and unlock £400 billion for the overall economy. That’s serious potential for efficiency, innovation, and better services.

⚖️ Easing Public Sector Pressures
Budget cuts, staff burnout, and low morale—sound familiar? AI could help. The report found that 61% of public sector workers feel overworked, and 70% say morale is down. AI can step in to automate tasks, reduce admin burdens, and free up time for frontline services.

🕒 AI Saves Time, Improves Quality
Imagine cutting waiting times and improving service delivery. The report says AI could help deliver 3.7 million extra GP appointments per week, increase teacher-to-student ratios by 16%, and free up the workload equivalent of 160,000 police officers. That’s efficiency at scale.

🤝 AI as a Workforce Partner
This isn’t about replacing people—it’s about supporting them. 56% of public sector jobs are likely to be augmented, not replaced, by AI. The challenge now? Getting AI tools into the hands of those who need them most.

🚦Slow Adoption, Big Potential
Right now, AI adoption in the public sector is low. Only 12% of leaders report significant AI deployment, and just 23% of public sector workers use AI regularly. That means the biggest gains are still ahead—but only if AI adoption accelerates.

🛠 What Needs to Happen Next?
For AI to truly deliver its potential, the government must:
✔️ Improve data infrastructure—55% of leaders say they need better access to structured data.
✔️ Provide legal clarity—60% say regulatory uncertainty holds back AI adoption.
✔️ Invest in AI skills—only 34% of leaders feel their teams are AI-ready.

The UK can’t afford to wait, according to this report —delaying AI adoption by five years could cost £150 billion, and I suspect other governments cannot wait either. It’s a missed opportunity they shouldn’t let happen.
