AI Six Podcast Episode 170: AI on Air: How Radio Can Win the Next Digital Wave

By

I’ve just finished delivering and grading the Certificate in AI for Radio in collaboration with the Learning Waves Skillnet, responsible for delivering training to Ireland’s commercial radio sector.

The sector is fiercely resilient, and in today’s episode, I want to share how they are adapting to AI, despite the real threats.

Imagine this: you finish your morning show at 9 am… and by 9:05, every highlight is clipped, captioned, and posted on social. Your sales team already has the sponsor pitch in their inbox, and your listeners are sharing your content on TikTok before you’ve even had coffee. That’s AI in radio, and it’s closer than you think.

I’ve just finished delivering the brand-new Certificate in AI for Radio. We had journalists, presenters, production staff, sales pros, marketing teams, programmers, and station managers all in the same room, and here’s the thing… many came in with zero AI knowledge.

Eight weeks later? They were leaving with personalised AI use cases for their stations, a toolkit of practical skills, and most importantly… excitement about the future. So much so, one student made this radio ad (all made by AI).

Because what they realised, and what I want you to take away today, is this: embracing AI is no longer a nice-to-have. It’s vital if radio is going to keep its audience, keep its advertisers, and keep its creative edge.

Why AI Matters for Radio Right Now

Let’s be honest: the way audiences consume audio has changed forever.
They’re streaming on-demand, following podcasts, scrolling TikTok, and listening to niche playlists. Radio has to fight harder than ever to grab and hold attention.

And your competition isn’t just the station down the road – it’s Spotify, YouTube, every creator with a microphone, and every brand running their own content channel.

AI is the tool that can level that playing field. It can help you:

  • Produce content faster.
  • Understand your audience better.
  • Repurpose your best moments across multiple platforms instantly.

The stations that adopt it now will be miles ahead of those who wait.

Inside the Certificate in AI for Radio

We built the Certificate to be practical from start to finish. Over eight modules, we covered:

  1. Introduction to AI – Busting myths and explaining what it is, and isn’t.
  2. Policy, Ethics and Data Management – Because governance and trust are non-negotiable.
  3. AI Audit – Using my TPS framework to spot quick wins in your Tasks, Processes, and Systems.
  4. Prompt Engineering – Writing instructions AI actually understands, tailored for radio.
  5. Practical Tools & Applications – From scripting and scheduling to editing and social media content.
  6. Practical Assignment – Building an AI use case for your station.
  7. Presentation and Feedback – So you leave with something ready to implement.

It wasn’t just theory; we got hands-on. People were trying tools, writing prompts, and testing outputs live.

Real AI Use Cases from the Course

Some of my favourite examples from participants:

  • AI-assisted news bulletins: speeding up scriptwriting while still fact-checking and adding human judgement.
  • Show notes and social posts generated instantly: every podcast episode now has captions, summaries, and TikTok-ready clips within minutes.
  • Automated sales proposals: pre-loaded with audience stats and show sponsorship ideas, freeing sales teams to spend more time with clients.
  • Experimenting with AI-powered audio – jingles, ads, voice-overs and even a radio drama!

Most of these ideas weren’t massive, expensive projects; they were small changes with huge impact.

Overcoming Fear and Building Excitement

At the start of the week, I heard things like:
“I’m worried this will replace my job.”
“I don’t think AI could do anything useful for my role.”

By the end? I was hearing:
“I can’t believe I just automated my Monday reports.”
“This will save me three hours a day.”
“I feel like I finally understand what AI is, and how to use it without losing control.”

The shift was clear: once people saw AI as a tool and not a threat, the energy changed completely.

The Future of AI in Radio

So where’s all this going? We’re already seeing:
– Personalised audio ads based on listener data.
– AI-assisted music programming to balance variety and familiarity.
– Synthetic voices for niche content, although this raises big questions about authenticity and trust.

The key is human oversight. AI can produce, analyse, and suggest… but the creativity, judgement, and connection with the audience? That still comes from you.

Here’s the truth: AI isn’t the future of radio, it’s the present.
The stations that will win the next digital wave are the ones that start experimenting now.

And if your radio station wants to run the Certificate in AI for Radio, get in touch with Learning Waves Skillnet, I’d love to bring it to your team. If you are outside Ireland, you can contact me directly.

Because radio has always been about connecting with people. AI is just the newest way to do that… faster, smarter, and at a scale we couldn’t imagine before.
