OpenAI has recently launched Study Mode, a new feature in ChatGPT designed to transform the AI chatbot from an answer-providing tool into an interactive educational tutor. This feature was officially rolled out on July 29, 2025, and represents OpenAI’s response to growing concerns about AI’s impact on education and students’ critical thinking skills
How Study Mode Works
Study Mode operates on the principle of Socratic questioning, encouraging students to engage actively with the material rather than simply receiving direct answers. When enabled, the feature:
- Asks probing questions to assess the student’s current skill level and understanding
- Provides scaffolded responses that help students make connections with topics they already know
- Offers interactive prompts that guide users through problems step-by-step
- Sometimes refuses to provide direct answers unless students demonstrate engagement with the material
The system customises its approach based on the student’s grade level, prior knowledge, and learning goals. For instance, if a college freshman asks about a physics problem, ChatGPT will skip basic explanations and provide a tailored lesson appropriate for their level.
Key Features and Capabilities
Educational Techniques
Study Mode incorporates several evidence-based educational methods:
- Socratic questioning to promote critical thinking
- Scaffolded learning with step-by-step guidance
- Built-in assessments to measure comprehension
- Personalized feedback based on previous conversations
Practical Applications
The feature is particularly useful for:
- Homework help without providing direct answers
- Test preparation through interactive quizzes
- Learning new topics with customised explanations
- Concept reinforcement through guided questioning
Students can upload course materials, images, or PDFs for contextualized help, and the system adapts responses based on individual learning goals.
Availability and Access
Study Mode is currently available to:
- All logged-in ChatGPT users (Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans)
- Works across all platforms: web, iOS, Android, and desktop
- Integrates with voice features for hands-free learning
- ChatGPT Edu subscribers will receive access “in the coming weeks”
Users can easily toggle the feature on or off by selecting “Study and learn” from the tools section in the ChatGPT interface.
Educational Impact and Limitations
Benefits:
Research suggests that when ChatGPT is used as a tutor, it can significantly improve academic performance. The feature aims to address studies showing that students who use AI for direct answers may experience reduced brain activity compared to those who engage in active learning.
Current Limitations
Despite its educational goals, Study Mode has some notable constraints:
No enforcement mechanisms:
Students can easily switch back to regular ChatGPT mode at any time
No parental or administrative controls:
Currently, there are no tools for educators to lock students into Study Mode
Self-motivation dependent:
Success relies on students choosing to use the feature rather than seeking quick answers
OpenAI acknowledges these limitations, with VP of Education Leah Belsky noting that the company may explore control options for parents and administrators in the future.
Study Mode represents OpenAI’s effort to balance AI’s power with educational responsibility, encouraging deeper learning while maintaining the accessibility that has made ChatGPT popular among students worldwide
