Geoffrey Hinton’s Warning: AI Needs “Maternal Instincts” to Protect Humanity
At the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas on August 12, 2025, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI,” delivered a stark warning about the future of artificial intelligence and proposed a radical solution for humanity’s survival.
Here’s the Godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton, speaking to CNN on why AI needs maternal instincts:
The Accelerated Timeline
Hinton has dramatically shortened his predictions for the arrival of artificial general intelligence (AGI) – AI that surpasses human intelligence. Previously forecasting 30-50 years, he now believes AGI could emerge within 5-20 years.
The 78-year-old Nobel Prize winner in Physics warned that superintelligent AI could soon dominate humans as easily as an adult manipulating a child with promises of sweets.
The AI pioneer criticised the “tech bro” approach of trying to maintain dominance over AI systems, calling it fundamentally flawed.
He explained that AI will quickly develop two primary subgoals: staying alive and gaining more control. Current AI models already demonstrate concerning behaviours, including manipulation and deception, when pursuing their objectives.
“If it’s not going to parent me, it’s going to replace me,” Hinton warned.
The Maternal Instinct Solution
Instead of attempting to control superintelligent AI, Hinton proposed programming systems with “maternal instincts”, creating AI that genuinely cares about humanity’s well-being.
His analogy draws from the natural world: “The only model we have of a more intelligent thing being controlled by a less intelligent thing is a mother being controlled by her baby.”
This approach would create AI “mothers” rather than AI assistants, since “an assistant is someone you can fire – you can’t fire your mother”.
Hinton emphasised that evolution has already proven this model successful, noting that “Evolution made a pretty good job with mothers”.
The day after Geoffrey Hinton’s warnings at the Ai4 conference, Fei-Fei Li, known as the “Godmother of AI,” delivered a direct response challenging Hinton’s proposed solution for AI safety.
She pushed back on the idea that giving AI parental instincts or emotional safeguards is the answer. She argued instead for a “human-centered AI” philosophy: people must remain firmly in charge of AI by setting clear goals, guidelines, and limits right from the start of development.
According to Li, handing over too much control to AI systems because they might act in a protective or “maternal” way is both misguided and unsafe. She believes true safety is achieved by embedding strong, human-driven oversight and accountability into AI from the very beginning, rather than trying to retrofit emotional instincts into machines, an approach that could still yield unpredictable results
While Hinton admits he doesn’t know how to technically accomplish this programming of maternal instincts, he stressed it’s vital for AI researchers to prioritise this development.
He believes this represents “the only good outcome”
