The battle of the AI Goliaths continues. Last week, OpenAI released its latest model, ChatGPT-5.2. With 1 billion users, it’s the largest and longest-running AI Large Language Model in the world.
GPT‑5.2 started rolling out on 11 December 2025 to paid ChatGPT plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise) and is also live in the API for developers. Rollout is gradual, and GPT‑5.1 will remain available for a few months as a “legacy” option before being retired.
Over time, OpenAI has stated that free‑tier users should also get some level of access, but with more limited usage.
Ultimately, ChatGPT-5.2 changes workflows because it helps you turn messy inputs into usable work faster, with fewer back-and-forth steps.
You can choose “speed vs depth”. Use a fast mode for quick drafting, and a deeper mode for planning, analysis, and complex work.
It handles longer documents better. You can paste a lot of text or upload files and still get structured outputs.
It produces work you can actually use. Not just paragraphs, but briefs, plans, action lists, slide outlines, and reports.
It follows instructions more consistently. If you give it a clear format, it is more likely to stick to it.
Key new capabilities
OpenAI highlights three main axes: reasoning, long context and pro‑grade tooling. Benchmarks and early testing show clear gains in math, coding, and scientific problem solving compared with 5.1 and prior models. The “Thinking”/“Pro” modes are tuned to reduce hallucinations and handle multi‑step, structured tasks (planning, multi‑doc synthesis, complex refactors) more consistently.
A big practical change is the 400k‑token context window, up from roughly 80–270k in earlier GPT‑5 variants. That’s enough to ingest large codebases, many papers, or entire policy packs and keep them “live” in a single session with much better long‑range reasoning.
Three variants in GPT-5.2
- GPT‑5.2 Instant: Optimised for speed and everyday querying, writing, translation and lighter interactive tasks.
- GPT‑5.2 Thinking: Slower, structured mode aimed at analysis, planning, complex coding, long‑doc reasoning and research workflows.
- GPT‑5.2 Pro: Top‑end accuracy/reliability tier for the hardest questions where latency and cost trade‑offs are acceptable.
A simple rule for choosing the right “mode”
- Use fast mode for quick drafts, rewrites, and ideas.
- Use deep mode for strategy, synthesis, planning, and anything with lots of constraints.
- Use the most careful mode when mistakes would be costly (reputation, legal, policy, numbers).
Practical use-case
Turn messy performance data into a clear report story
When you use it
You have GA4, social, email, paid, or PR results, but you need a clean narrative for a monthly report or campaign wrap.
What you give ChatGPT
- Date range and goal (example: “October campaign report for leadership”)
- KPI definitions (what counts as a conversion, lead, engagement)
- A table or bullets of the key metrics (even if rough)
- Context notes (budget changes, key moments, major content, issues)
What you get back
- 5 bullet executive summary
- What went up/down and what mattered
- Likely drivers (clearly labelled as hypotheses)
- 3 to 5 recommendations with priorities
Prompt you can copy
“Here is performance data for [date range] and context notes. Write a report narrative for [audience]. Output: (1) 5-bullet exec summary, (2) key wins/losses, (3) what likely drove results and what evidence would confirm it, (4) 5 actions ranked by impact.”
