One year. 300 episodes. This is The State of AI Address.
One year ago today, on St Brigid’s Day, I pressed record on the first episode of AI SIX.
St Brigid. Our female patron saint of resilience, leadership, courage, and spiritual strength. I didn’t choose that date by accident.
If you’ve been with me since Day 1, thank you. If you’re new, welcome. You’re right on time.
Three hundred episodes. Six minutes a day. Every single day for a year.
I’ll be honest, there were mornings I didn’t know what to say. Mornings when the news moved faster than I could process it. Mornings when I wondered if anyone was listening.
But I kept showing up. Because that’s what this podcast is really about.
AI Is Like Compound Interest
AI works like compound interest.
The winners arenโt the people with the fanciest tools. Theyโre the people who get 1% better every day.
James Clear wrote about this in Atomic Habits: small daily progress, compounding over time. That idea inspired this podcast.
Three hundred episodes taught me something important:
AI does not replace effort. It rewards discipline.
Right now, there are two paths you can take with AI:
1. Dabbling โ tools, prompt hacks, endless tweaking, lots of playingโฆ but little progress.
2. Strategy โ better judgement, better workflows, better outputs, week after week.
This episode is for those choosing the second path.
Ireland now ranks fourth in the world for AI adoption, at 45%. The tools are everywhere.
But adoption without strategy is just noise.
Six Shifts That Actually Mattered This Year
1. From Outputs to Workflows
The value isnโt a better paragraph. The value is a better system.
If AI isnโt saving you time end-to-end, youโre playing โ not improving.
2. From Prompting to Briefing
Prompting isnโt the skill. Briefing is.
Most poor outputs come from vague inputs. The quality of what you get depends entirely on the clarity of what you put in.
3. Trust Became the Currency
Weโve entered an era of plausible everything:
plausible text, plausible images, plausible expertise.
Trust now depends on process โ sourcing, verification, disclosure, and restraint.
4. Quality Is Not Automatic
Models can be helpful and wrong at the same time.
Being the editor-in-chief? Thatโs the real job now.
5. Judgement Is the Differentiator
Speed is available to everyone.
Taste, judgement, and ethics are not.
6. Governance Arrived
Teams are moving from experimentation to accountability:
Who can use what?
With which data?
Under what review?
What 300 Episodes Taught Me
The pace of change is unprecedented. What was cutting-edge six months ago is now basic.
AI maturity is happening in dog years. We went from chatbots to agents in 18 months.
Adoption canโt keep up with capability. The tools are racing ahead while most people are still learning to prompt.
AI literacy is dangerously low. Leaders are making decisions about systems theyโve never used.
Trust lags behind capability. People have been burned by hype before. Theyโre waiting to see results.
And hereโs what Iโve realised:
The gap between what AI can do and what organisations are actually doing isnโt a problem.
Thatโs where the work is.
The Stoic Part
Ryan Holidayโs writing on Stoic philosophy has influenced me deeply.
You canโt control the pace of change.
You canโt control headlines.
You canโt control what platforms do next.
But you can control:
- your judgement
- your standards
- What you publish
- What you approve
- what you refuse to rush
In a world of synthetic everything, judgment is the advantage.
My Ground Rules for 2026
- Do not outsource judgement.
- Do not publish what you cannot defend.
- Keep sensitive data out by default.
- Measure usefulness, not novelty.
- Build habits, not hacks.
- Stay calm. Stay consistent. Let daily effort compound.
A Commitment
William Butler Yeats โ whose portrait hangs above my desk โ once wrote:
โThink like a wise man but communicate in the language of the people.โ
Thatโs been my goal with this podcast: think strategically, communicate simply.
So today, on this milestone, Iโm making a pledge:
I am committing to train 500,000 professionals in AI โ for free.
Your price of entry?
Six minutes a day.
Show up.
Listen.
Apply one thing.
Repeat.
If you do that, I promise you: your compound interest will be AI literacy, fluency, and competence.
If you take one thing from this episode, let it be this:
AI rewards consistency more than intensity.
Not flashes of brilliance.
Not the perfect prompt.
The daily discipline of showing up and getting slightly better.
This was The State of AI Address.
Episode 300. One year in.
