Jack Dorsey’s company, Block (parent of Square and Cash App), has announced plans to cut about 40% of its workforce, more than 4,000 jobs, and the stock market responded positively. In a statement, he wrote: “intelligence tools” have redefined how companies should be organised, and he predicted that most other companies will make similar AI‑enabled job cuts in the coming year.
AI commentator and practitioner, Kyle Balmer, explains.
@iamkylebalmer Jack Dorsey just eliminated 40% of his workforce overnight. Why? AI. Is this the first mass layoff because of AI? #ainews #learnai #jackdorsey

Dorsey went into some detail in a post on X.

What AI tools are replacing staff in Block?
Block hasn’t explicitly listed the AI tools that are replacing staff; however, they have publicly named AI systems that they have already deployed.
Cashbot (Cash App support bot): An LLM‑based assistant that handles customer support queries in chat, now resolving over 60% of inquiries without a human and providing instant support in 88% of cases.
Goose (in‑house AI platform): An internal platform CNBC reports Block is using to automate and accelerate engineering work; layoffs are “concentrated in engineering roles,” consistent with Block leaning on Goose instead of human developers for some tasks.
Square Manager‑style “AI assistants” for sellers: Tools embedded in the Square dashboard that watch inventory, sales, and staffing, then recommend actions (re‑ordering, adjusting shifts, promotions) in real time.
Cash App “Moneybot”- type automation: Internal descriptions highlight bots that monitor consumer spending, flag patterns, suggest savings or bill‑splitting moves, and execute workflows automatically once users approve.
Where these tools overlap with jobs
Customer support: Cashbot automates routine support, reducing demand for frontline advocates and tier‑1 support staff.
Engineering and product work: Goose and related tooling automate code generation, testing, and maintenance, allowing Block to do more with fewer software engineers.
Operations and analytics: Square’s AI features provide real‑time menu, staffing, and customer‑behaviour insights with “clear recommendations,” which replaces some functions previously done by ops analysts and sales/support specialists.
Back‑office and workflow roles: Internal AI agents that can “watch, flag, suggest, and act” on both consumer and merchant sides displace manual monitoring, reporting, and some decision‑support roles.
Dorsey explicitly links the 40% headcount cut to this AI tool stack, saying he expects “the majority of companies” to make similar structural changes as they adopt comparable tools.
