In less than a year, agentic AI has become a core capability employers expect. The 2026 Stanford AI Index reveals that mentions of agentic AI in job postings jumped 280% in 12 months, while AI skills now appear in 2.5% of all US job postings.
The Agentic Hiring Surge
Stanford’s AI Index is the annual report card for the AI field, and this year’s labour market data tells a story every leader needs to hear. Lightcast, who analyse billions of job postings, added agentic AI as a brand-new skill cluster in 2026, bringing the total number of AI clusters tracked to 10 and individual AI skills monitored to more than 300.
Mentions of agentic AI in job postings jumped from 0.06% in 2024 to 0.23% in 2025, a 280% increase in just 12 months. Roughly 90,000 US job postings now ask for agentic AI skills. Meanwhile, mentions of ChatGPT, chatbots, and conversational AI all declined. Employers are moving past the chat interface and want people who can build AI systems that take action and complete tasks.
AI Skills Are Now Mainstream
AI-related skills now appear in 2.5% of all US job postings, up 55% in a single year and 297% compared to a decade ago. Python leads, appearing in over 258,000 AI-related job postings in 2025, up nearly 30% year on year. But the real story is in deployment skills like Amazon Web Services, scalability, and workflow management.
Employers are hiring people who can put AI into production and keep it running at scale. A generic AI label on a CV means less than it did a year ago. What matters is whether someone can integrate, orchestrate, and scale AI systems.
The European Reality Check
The share of AI-related job postings varies hugely between countries. Singapore leads at 4.7%, followed by Hong Kong at 3.5%, Luxembourg at 3.4%, and Spain at 3.3%. The United States sits at 2.6%.
The United Kingdom, often held up as Europe’s AI leader, sits at just 1.9%. Lower than the US, lower than Spain, lower than Luxembourg. Ireland sits inside that same European pattern, and the honest assessment is that our labour market is not signalling AI demand at anything like the pace of global leaders.
This means the talent pool for AI-ready workers is thinner in Ireland and the UK than in Singapore or Spain. It also means organisations here that move first on AI skills will have a disproportionate advantage.
The Global Investment Picture
Global private AI investment reached $344.7 billion in 2025, up 127% year on year. US private investment alone hit $285.9 billion, roughly 23 times what China invested privately. At the same time, the performance gap between top US and Chinese AI models has effectively closed, with models trading the top spot on global leaderboards with every release.
The number of AI researchers and developers moving to the US has dropped 89% since 2017, with 80% of that decline happening in the last year alone. South Korea now leads the world in AI patents per capita. Innovation is getting more distributed, even as investment gets more concentrated.
The Bottom Line
The mistake most often seen in Irish and UK organisations is treating AI as something to test. Stanford’s data makes it clear that testing time is ending. Employers at the global frontier are hiring for orchestration, scaling, and production deployment. The world has moved from experimentation to implementation.
