Hiring has always been part science, part guesswork.
But what if you could remove the guesswork entirely?
In this episode, I sat down with Travis Coffey, co-founder of Quotient AI, to explore how predictive AI is transforming recruitment, and why getting hiring right is now a competitive advantage.
The Real Cost of Getting Hiring Wrong
Most organisations accept a simple truth: hiring is inconsistent.
Travis shared a stat that stops you in your tracks. Traditional interviews have around a 50% success rate.
That means one in two hires may not work out.
Now think about the cost of that.
Not just salaries, but:
- Lost productivity
- Training time
- Team disruption
- Missed revenue targets
Many organisations simply absorb this as part of doing business. But according to Travis, thatโs a problem AI can now solve.
From Gut Feeling to Data-Driven Hiring
Quotient AI is built on a simple idea: replace guesswork with data.
Instead of relying solely on interviews or instinct, their platform analyses behaviour.
Hereโs how it works:
- They assess an entire team
- Identify the traits of top performers
- Build a unique โrevenue DNAโ profile
- Compare candidates against that model
The result? A predictive score that shows how likely a candidate is to succeed in that specific organisation.
Not in general. Not compared to the market.
๐ But in your business, with your culture, and your expectations
Why Top Performers Donโt Always Transfer
One of the most interesting insights from the conversation is this:
๐ A top performer in one company can fail in another
Why?
Because every organisation has its own โDNAโ.
Different expectations. Different pressures. Different ways of working.
So hiring someone based on past success alone is not enough.
You need to understand whether they will succeed in your environment.
AI Doesnโt Replace Humans โ It Enhances Them
Thereโs a lot of fear around AI in recruitment.
Will it replace hiring managers?
Will it make decisions for us?
The answer here is no.
Travis is very clear: AI is a support tool, not a replacement.
It adds another layer of insight.
It helps you ask better questions.
It helps you spot risks earlier.
It helps you make more informed decisions.
But the final decision still sits with humans.
Beyond Hiring: Developing Better Teams
This is not just about recruitment.
Once you understand someoneโs behavioural profile, you can also:
- Improve onboarding
- Personalise coaching
- Build development plans
- Plan promotions and succession
In other words, itโs not just about hiring the right person โ itโs about helping them succeed once theyโre in the role.
The Surprising Patterns AI Reveals
One of my favourite parts of this conversation was hearing about unexpected insights from the data.
For example, candidates who score highly in:
- Empathy
- Fairness
- Curiosity
โฆcan sometimes struggle with closing sales.
Not because they lack ability, but because they spend more time exploring and looking for win-win outcomes.
This doesnโt mean you shouldnโt hire them.
It means you coach them differently.
Thatโs the power of insight.
The Bias Problem โ And How to Reduce It
We also talked about one of the biggest risks in AI: bias.
Quotient addresses this by focusing on explainability.
Instead of a black-box decision, you see:
- What factors influenced the score
- What strengths the candidate brings
- What risks to watch
This is critical, especially in regions like the EU where recruitment is considered a high-risk AI use case.
Transparency matters.
The End of the โBeer Testโ
Letโs be honest.
A lot of hiring decisions still come down to:
๐ โDo I like this person?โ
Travis calls it the โbeer testโ.
Would you have a drink with them?
Itโs human. But itโs not reliable.
And when hiring decisions affect millions in revenue, instinct alone isnโt enough.
AI gives you a clearer picture of who someone really is โ beyond first impressions.
What This Means for the Future of Work
We are entering a new phase of hiring.
One where:
- Data supports decisions
- Bias is reduced
- Performance is predicted
- People are better matched to roles
And perhaps most importantly:
๐ Organisations can build stronger, more consistent teams
My Take
This is one of the most practical uses of AI Iโve seen.
Because it solves a real, expensive problem.
Hiring has always been uncertain.
Now, it doesnโt have to be.
But hereโs the key:
AI is only valuable if itโs used responsibly.
That means:
- Keeping humans in the loop
- Being transparent
- Using insights, not replacing judgment
Because at the end of the day, this is not just about talent.
Itโs about people.
