Anthropic has launched Claude for Small Business. It went live on 13 May, and it’s a package of pre-built AI workflows that plug straight into the tools small business owners already use. QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva, DocuSign, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack. The pitch is simple. Toggle it on, connect your tools, pick a job, and Claude does the work.
First, an important caveat. This is currently a US-focused launch. The in-person Claude Small Business Tour is running across 10 American cities this spring, alongside PayPal partnerships and free workshops. More cities are planned for autumn, but no European dates have been confirmed yet.
What Claude for Small Business actually is
This isnโt a new product tier, itโs a plugin that runs inside Claude Cowork, Anthropicโs desktop tool that connects Claude to your files and apps (which I covered back in Episode 295).
It includes:
- 15 ready-to-use workflows
- 15 reusable skills
These are based on interviews with hundreds of small business owners about the tasks that typically get pushed to evenings โ payroll, invoicing, sales campaigns, tax prep and contract reviews.
Instead of starting with a blank chat, you simply choose a job from a menu.
How it works in practice
Hereโs where it gets interesting.
You enable the plugin in Cowork, connect tools like QuickBooks and PayPal, and ask Claude to plan your next payroll run. It pulls your financial data, reconciles incoming payments, builds a 30-day forecast, flags overdue invoices, and drafts reminder emails โ all ready for your review.
Nothing is sent or actioned without your approval.
Other workflows include:
- Month-end close: reconciles accounts, flags issues, and generates a plain-English profit and loss summary
- Morning brief: delivers a weekly snapshot of cash flow, pipeline, and priorities via Slack
As Anthropic President Daniela Amodei put it:
โPeople run the business, and Claude helps take the late-night work off their plates.โ
Why this matters for SMEs
Letโs bring this back to reality.
Research from Google and Amรกrach Research (March) found:
- 80% of Irish SMEs believe AI can benefit their business
- 65% expect it to drive growth this year
- But up to 33% of micro-businesses still arenโt using AI at all
The barriers? Skills, cost, and fear of getting it wrong.
Meanwhile, the Trinity College Dublin and Microsoft AI Economy report shows that SMEs that invest in AI are more than twice as likely to see productivity gains compared to large organisations.
The issue isnโt potential, itโs adoption.
Whatโs different this time
Until now, AI for small businesses has mostly meant using tools like ChatGPT or Claude in a browser, typing prompts and copying results elsewhere.
Thatโs helpful, but itโs not a transformation.
Claude for Small Business changes that by:
- embedding AI into the tools you already use
- removing the need to โfigure out prompts.โ
- keeping you in control with approval-first workflows
In short, AI is moving from a tool you visitโฆ to a system that works alongside you.
Final thought
For SME owners in Ireland and the UK, the question isnโt whether the workshops are coming to your city โ theyโre not, not yet.
The real question is this:
Will you be the business owner who connects your tools and sets up one workflow this monthโฆ
or the one still copying and pasting at midnight?
And remember, the free AI Fluency for Small Business course, created by Anthropic and PayPal, is available on demand now.
