Cisco’s 90,000 AI Agents rollout is one of the most significant enterprise AI deployments we’ve seen, and it raises a question every organisation needs to answer: when an AI agent can act across your workplace systems, are humans genuinely in control — or just accountable on paper?
From AI Assistant to AI Agent: What Cisco’s MyAgent Tells Us
On 27 August, Cisco announced it was rolling out a personalised AI agent called MyAgent to around 90,000 employees. To be clear, that’s not 90,000 separate robot workers — each employee gets access to their own personal AI agent through Circuit, Cisco’s internal AI platform. MyAgent can operate across Outlook, Webex, Jira and SharePoint. You give it an objective and the context it needs, and it coordinates the steps to move that work forward.
Cisco describes this as moving beyond chat and towards “supervised autonomous execution”. Unlike a conventional chatbot that waits for a question and responds with a draft or a summary, an AI agent takes a goal, searches for relevant information, works with connected systems and coordinates several steps towards an outcome. MyAgent also has persistent memory — it can retain your preferences, previous interactions and working context over time.
The Real Question: What Does Human Oversight Actually Mean?
Cisco says MyAgent will operate with appropriate human oversight. But that’s exactly where the most important question begins. What does oversight actually mean when an AI agent can move work forward across multiple systems?
This is what I’ve been calling compression overload. AI compresses the time between information, decision and action — but the human asked to oversee it hasn’t suddenly gained more time, more context or more cognitive capacity. The employee may remain accountable on paper, but that doesn’t mean they’re genuinely in control in practice.
If an agent can coordinate work across several tools, your organisation needs crystal clarity on:
- What the agent can do without approval
- Which actions require human review
- What is recorded and auditable
- When a workflow must pause before proceeding
Otherwise, “human oversight” risks becoming a label rather than a genuine safeguard.
Cisco’s Governance Approach — and What to Watch
To be fair, Cisco has clearly thought about some of these governance issues. MyAgent runs through Circuit, which Cisco describes as a secure, governed platform giving employees access to approved AI models, agents and enterprise data — rather than just plugging consumer AI tools into internal systems. The platform can also use different AI models for different tasks, balancing capability, cost and speed.
Cisco’s earlier Circuit platform reportedly reached 90% employee adoption, with 73% of users reporting improved productivity and an average saving of five hours per week. But — and this matters — those are Cisco’s own figures, not independently audited, and they relate to the earlier platform, not MyAgent specifically.
The Questions Your Organisation Must Ask First
If you’re considering AI agents, don’t start with “what tasks can the agent complete?” Start here:
- What information can it access?
- What actions can it take without approval?
- What record exists of what it accessed, recommended and changed?
- Who is accountable when something goes wrong?
- Does the person supervising it genuinely have the time and authority to stay in control?
