AI SIX Podcast Episode 446: Claude Cowork for Beginners: Your First Five Workflows

By

Claude Cowork moves AI from answering questions to actually doing the work — inside your files. In this episode, I walk you through your first five Claude Cowork workflows so you can go from chatting with AI to genuinely delegating real tasks this week.

What Is Claude Cowork?

Cowork is Claude working inside your actual files — not just talking about them. You open the Claude desktop app, click the Cowork tab, point it at a folder, describe the outcome you want, and it reads what’s there, proposes a plan, then executes it. It creates documents, organises files, builds spreadsheets, and keeps you posted as it goes.

Two things to know before you start: Cowork draws more heavily on your monthly usage allowance than regular chat, so save it for genuinely multi-step work. And the desktop app needs to stay open while it’s working — no closing the laptop mid-task.

Your First Five Claude Cowork Workflows

Workflow 1: Tame One Messy Folder

Copy a slice of your downloads into a test folder and ask Cowork to sort by file type, rename everything descriptively with dates, and archive anything older than six months. Watch how it plans before it acts. This is your confidence-builder.

Workflow 2: Notes Into a Briefing

Drop scattered meeting notes into a folder and ask for one briefing document with key points, decisions, and actions with named owners. When I first tested Cowork with my podcast show notes, this kind of synthesis work is where it really shines.

Workflow 3: Expenses Rescue

A folder of receipt screenshots becomes a spreadsheet with vendor, date, and amount pulled from each image. You still verify the figures yourself — that checking step has your name on it.

Workflow 4: Notes Into Slides

Give it your talking points and brand assets, ask for a presentation, then refine it conversationally — make it more visual, cut it to 10 slides, add a summary slide. Cowork updates the deck directly in your folder.

Workflow 5: A Scheduled Round-Up

Type /schedule and set a recurring task. For example: every Friday at 4pm, summarise every document added to this project folder this week into one page. Monday briefings, media monitoring digests, weekly status notes for your manager — all running on a timer. Pair the Friday 4pm schedule with a cup of tea and let it work while you wind down.

Ground Rules Before You Start

  • Always start with copies of files you don’t care about
  • Be specific — vague instructions produce unpredictable results
  • Keep sensitive files in folders Cowork never touches
  • Ask it to summarise what it did, then spot-check outputs — especially dates and figures
  • Treat it like a fast, capable colleague in their first week: trusted with real work, but every outcome reviewed

Where This Sits on the AI Maturity Model

Back in January I said Cowork marked the shift from AI you talk to, to AI that works. Six months on, I’ll go further. On my own maturity model — the one I set out in episode 270 — this is your bridge from level 2 (assistants) to level 4: agentic AI. You don’t need to write a line of code to cross it. You need a folder, a clear brief, and half an hour of curiosity.

For those of you in government or larger organisations: on Team and Enterprise plans, administrators can switch Cowork on for specific groups, restrict features by department, and expand access as adoption grows. Start with a small pilot team, set the guardrails centrally, then scale up.
