AI SIX Podcast Episode 451: Claude for Science

By

Claude for Science is Anthropic’s new AI workbench built for researchers, and it launched on 30 June in beta. In this episode, I dig into what it actually does, what real scientists are saying about it, and why human expertise still matters even with this kind of tool in your hands.

What Is Claude for Science?

This is not just another chatbot. Claude for Science is a proper scientific workbench — it renders 3D protein structures and genome tracks on screen, keeps a full audit trail for reproducibility, manages heavy computing jobs, and ships with more than sixty prebuilt scientific skills connected to databases researchers already live in, like PubMed, UniProt, ClinVar, PDB, ChEMBL and GEO.

My favourite feature? A reviewer agent running in the background checking citations, calculations and figures. Basically, a proofreader for science. And analyses can run on your own machine, your university cluster, or rented processing power on demand.

What Early Users Are Saying

The early feedback is genuinely exciting — but also honest about the limits.

  • A team at the Allen Institute produced ten literature reviews, many over one hundred pages, using the tool.
  • A researcher at UCSF reports getting analyses done in roughly a tenth of the usual time.
  • Professor Michael Pollastri at Northeastern University called it “an unbelievable tool” and said it could increase experimentation pace “by orders of magnitude.”
  • Harvard physicist Matthew Schwartz told MIT Technology Review that Claude currently performs at about the level of a second-year graduate student — very capable, but not the professor.

And I love this quote from Northeastern researcher Jared Auclair: “This is not a shortcut to discovery. It is a co-pilot that requires a skilled pilot.” That sums it up perfectly.

Where It Still Falls Short

There are real rough edges here. One scientist found that chemical databases did not display properly inside the tool. Hallucination risks remain — AI systems can confidently misread nuance or invent details. And at least one researcher said he would need institutional data protection safeguards in place before adopting it in his lab. If you work in a research office in Ireland or across Europe, that point is worth sitting with seriously.

The Bigger Picture

This is Anthropic’s third big science move in just over a year — from free API credits for researchers, to Claude for Life Sciences, to now this standalone app included in existing paid Claude plans. There is nothing extra to buy, though workplace accounts need an admin to switch it on, and at launch it runs on Mac and Linux only.

Anthropic is also planning to run its own early-stage drug research using Claude for Science, with a focus on neglected diseases. That spooked markets — shares in Schrödinger fell about 8.3% on launch day, Recursion dropped over 3%, and IQVIA by just over 2%.

And closer to home — Anthropic has announced 200 new jobs in Ireland as it expands its Dublin office. The company building this workbench is not a distant player. It is hiring here, and that matters for our research and technology ecosystem.

My Take

Regular listeners know my core belief: AI amplifies expertise, it does not replace it. Claude for Science is that belief turned into a user interface. The drudge work — literature trawling, data cleaning, formatting — gets automated. What stays human is the judgment, the hypothesis, the moment a scientist looks at a plot and thinks, that result looks wrong. That instinct is now better fed than ever.
