DeepSeek has sent an AI shockwave across marks, industry and media for its capabilities, speed, and potential to disrupt AI. But what is it, and why is everyone talking about it?
Welcome to AI Six, the podcast for marketers embracing the AI age. Iโm Joanne Sweeney and today, Iโm diving into DeepSeekโthe Chinese AI model thatโs causing a stir in the tech world.
What is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek, is a large AI model with advanced reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Unlike some AI models that focus on text or images, DeepSeek is multimodal, meaning it can handle multiple types of data, like text, images, and code.
So what is unique about it? Well, itโs its speed, efficiency, and its ability to generate highly coherent responses. It is categorically another step in AIโs rapid evolution.
But more than that, DeepSeekโs model outperformed Metaโs Llama 3.1, OpenAIโs GPT-4o and Anthropicโs Claude Sonnet 3.5 in accuracy, ranging from complex problem-solving to math and coding.
Understandably itโs making the early adopters nervous. But for marketers it means that this technology will be able to do more and cost less. So we are watching it with great interest.
The “Shook” Factor
So is bigger better when it comes to AI?
Everyone wants to know why DeepSeek is shaking things up? First, itโs proving that open-source AI is catching up with proprietary models like those from OpenAI, Meta and Google.
Secondly, the cost efficiency has disrupted the market, hence the stock market shock.
Letโs compare the training cost of DeepSeek v3 to Metaโs Llama v3.1 โ a staggering $5.6 million versus $123 million.

Thirdly, organisations and businesses are already testing it for automated research, content creation, and even software development. If DeepSeek continues improving, it could seriously change how we use AI.
DeepSeek vs. The Competition
How does it compare to other models?
- Vs. GPT-4 โ Some claim itโs faster and more efficient, but OpenAIโs model still has the brand trust and developer ecosystem.
- Vs. Gemini (Google) โ Googleโs Gemini is heavily integrated into search and Googleโs products, while DeepSeek is more flexible.
- Vs. Open-Source Models โ Itโs considered one of the strongest open-source contenders, making AI more accessible.
Real-World Applications
Companies are already using DeepSeek for:
- Automating customer support with smarter chatbots
- Generating complex research reports faster than humans
- Programming assistance, reducing manual coding
If these applications continue growing, DeepSeek could become a serious AI powerhouse.
The Future of DeepSeek
So, where is this going?
Some experts believe DeepSeek could push AI accessibility forward, making cutting-edge models more widely available. Others warn about misuse, bias, and regulatory challenges.
Itโs a Chinese-owned company, spun out from a Chinese investment firm, so might that repel global use? Well, not if the app download numbers are anything to go by in the first week of its launch. On iOS, DeepSeek is, at the time of recording, the No. 1 free app in the U.S. App Store as well as 51 other countries.
So the key question is: Will DeepSeek set a new standard, or will it be a stepping stone for something even bigger?
The Big Question
Thatโs it for todayโs episode. What do you thinkโwill DeepSeek change the AI landscape, or is it just another hype cycle?
