Gemini’s new family of AI models is here, and Google’s strategy is telling. In this episode, I break down what the new Gemini model releases mean for enterprise AI, public sector security, and why specialisation is beating scale as the next big AI battleground.
Gemini’s New Family of AI Models: What Google Just Launched
Google has launched three new Gemini models, and each one is aimed at a very different use case. Let me walk you through what’s new and why it matters.
The Three New Models
- Gemini 3.6 Flash — The flagship workhorse. Google says it’s faster, cheaper, and more efficient than its predecessor, using up to 17% fewer tokens. That’s a big deal for developers building agents and high-volume systems.
- Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite — Built for low-cost, high-speed use cases where you need something reliable but don’t need heavy reasoning power.
- Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber — This is the one I find most interesting. It’s been fine-tuned specifically for finding and fixing cybersecurity vulnerabilities, and it’s only available to governments and trusted partners through a limited access pilot.
The Strategy Behind the Launch
What stands out to me here isn’t just the models themselves — it’s the market segmentation strategy. Google is deliberately building different model classes for different jobs: one for general work, one for cheap deployment, and one for sensitive security work. That mirrors a broader shift in the AI industry right now. The conversation is moving away from “who has the biggest model” toward “who can ship the most useful and controllable one.”
Early reviewers are calling Gemini 3.6 Flash a real but modest upgrade. It wins points for speed, lower cost, and multimodal flexibility, but several testers say it’s not a dramatic leap in coding quality or reasoning. In other words, Google may have built a better workhorse — not a new king of the category. And honestly? For most use cases, that’s exactly what people need.
What About Gemini 3.5 Pro?
Google had previously signalled that Gemini 3.5 Pro was coming, but reports suggest it’s been delayed and is still being tested with partners. For enterprise users, that matters — Pro is typically the flagship for deeper reasoning and complex coding tasks. Worth watching.
Why This Matters for Public Sector Professionals
For those of us working in Irish or EU public sector contexts, this story is particularly relevant. AI competition is increasingly about deployment efficiency, security, and sector-specific tools — not just raw model power. The cyber-focused model also raises important governance questions:
- Who gets access to Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber?
- How will it be audited?
- Can governments genuinely rely on vendor-controlled systems for sensitive security work?
The bigger picture is that Google is positioning Gemini as an operating layer for agents, enterprise software, and embedded AI across products. This isn’t just a model launch — it’s a signal that the next phase of AI will be defined by specialisation, cost control, and trust.
