AI Six Podcast Episode 34: Microsoft Copilot: A Marketer’s Best AI Friend

By

Have you noticed how much time you spend writing content briefs, crafting social media posts, or analysing marketing data? What if there was an AI assistant already built into the tools you use everyday that could transform your workflow?

Welcome to The AI Six Podcast, where I help you learn and keep up with AI in six minutes a day. Today’s episode is all about why Microsoft Copilot is quickly becoming a marketer’s best AI friend.

What is Microsoft Copilot?

Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant that’s deeply integrated across Microsoft 365 apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Unlike standalone AI tools that require you to switch between multiple platforms, Copilot works within the Microsoft ecosystem you’re likely already using for your marketing operations.

As a long-time Microsoft user, like you, there is an inherent trust there, right? So by default, we are going to be drawn to its AI features and functionality.

Most if not all of my government and public sector clients are Microsoft-first in their agencies so I’m guessing they will be drawn to Co-pilot for that reason.

What makes it particularly valuable for marketers is how it understands context across your documents, emails, presentations, and data—helping you work more efficiently whilst maintaining brand consistency.

Why Copilot is Valuable for Marketers

  1. Time efficiency – Copilot can draft content, summarise lengthy documents, and generate creative ideas in seconds. This means you can produce more high-quality content in less time, freeing you up for strategic thinking.
  2. Data analysis made simple – Marketing is increasingly data-driven, and Copilot transforms how you work with Excel. It can analyse trends, create visualisations, and extract insights from complex datasets with simple natural language prompts.
  3. Enhanced collaboration – In Teams, Copilot can summarise meeting notes, create action items, and help you catch up on discussions you’ve missed—ensuring your marketing team stays aligned without endless status meetings.
  4. Consistency across channels – By understanding your brand voice from existing materials, Copilot helps maintain consistent messaging across all your marketing touchpoints, from email campaigns to social media posts.
  5. Personalisation at scale – Copilot can help tailor communications for different audience segments by analysing past interactions and suggesting personalised content approaches.

How Marketers Are Using Copilot

In my conversations with marketing teams across, I’ve discovered several clever ways they’re leveraging Copilot:

Content Creation and Ideation

Use Copilot in Word to generate first drafts of blog posts, whitepapers, and email campaigns. Provide Copilot with your target audience, key messages, and tone of voice, then edit the AI-generated content to add human creativity and brand nuance.

Data-Driven Decision Making

Use Copilot in Excel to quickly analyse marketing data such as survey feedback, social media insights, and web analytics. What previously took hours of complex formula work now happens in minutes with simple prompts like “Show me which content is driving most engagement and what channels performed when it came to dwell time..”

Presentation Development

Use Copilot in PowerPoint to create compelling presentations. Start with a basic brief, and Copilot generates slide layouts, suggests visualisations, and even helps craft persuasive narratives that align with your objectives.

Email Management

Use Copilot in Outlook to draft responses, summarise important threads, and prioritise busy inboxes.

Meeting Productivity

Virtual marketing teams use Copilot in Teams to transcribe and summarise brainstorming sessions, ensuring good ideas don’t get lost and that team members who couldn’t attend stay in the loop. It can also summarise follow-up actions to be taken when and by whom.

Getting Started with Copilot

If you’re keen to try Copilot for your marketing work, here’s my quick-start approach:

  • Start with content ideation in Word, asking Copilot to generate outlines for your next campaign
  • Move to Excel to analyse your marketing metrics with natural language prompts
  • Try using Copilot to summarise lengthy competitor reports or market research
  • Experiment with email drafting in Outlook, especially for routine communications
  • Remember that Copilot works best when you provide clear context and objectives

Privacy Considerations and Data Protection

While Copilot offers tremendous benefits, many marketers have asked me about privacy concerns. Here’s what you need to know:

Microsoft has stated that Copilot does not use your data to train its AI models. According to their official documentation, your content—including confidential business information, campaign strategies, and customer data—remains your intellectual property and is not used to improve the underlying AI models.

However, it’s still important to take precautions, especially when working with sensitive marketing data:

  1. Review your organisation’s Microsoft 365 settings – Ensure your IT department has configured appropriate data governance policies.
  2. Be mindful with confidential information – Consider what you ask Copilot to process. For highly sensitive campaign information or proprietary strategies, you might want to use Copilot more selectively.
  3. Enable additional privacy features – Microsoft allows organisations to enable “Enhanced Data Protection” settings that provide additional safeguards.
  4. Regularly review permissions – Check which Microsoft 365 apps have Copilot enabled and adjust according to your company’s data sensitivity requirements.
  5. Stay updated on policy changes – Microsoft’s data usage policies may evolve, so regularly review their privacy documentation or consult with your data protection officer.

For marketers handling regulated data (like financial services or healthcare), always ensure Copilot usage complies with relevant regulations such as GDPR in the UK and EU.

Conclusion

Microsoft Copilot isn’t just another AI tool—it’s an integrated assistant that works where marketers already spend most of their time. By reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks and enhancing your analytical capabilities, Copilot allows you to focus on what truly matters: creative strategy and meaningful customer connections.

As marketing continues to become more complex and data-driven, having an AI assistant like Copilot could be the competitive advantage that sets your brand apart.
