AI SIX Podcast Episode 439: Open AI Launches ChatGPT-5.6

By

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT-5.6 — not as a single model, but as a family of three: Sol, Terra, and Luna. In this episode, I break down what each model does, how the pricing works, and why you need to know which tier is actually powering your tools.

What OpenAI Actually Launched

The public rollout of ChatGPT 5.6 began on 9 July 2026 — so if it hasn’t hit your smartphone or desktop yet, it will soon. And here’s the thing: this isn’t one model. It’s a family of three, each designed for a different job.

  • Sol — the flagship, built for the hardest tasks: complex coding, deep research, and multi-step agentic workflows.
  • Terra — the middle tier, solid performance for everyday knowledge work at roughly half the price of Sol.
  • Luna — the budget workhorse, designed for high-volume, routine tasks like bulk summarisation and classification.

The names matter. Over the next year, these models will quietly power everything from ChatGPT to your productivity suite — often without a label telling you which one is doing the work.

Pricing as Product Strategy

This is where it gets really interesting. OpenAI has turned pricing into a product decision, and it’s worth paying attention to the numbers.

  • Sol: ~$5 per million input tokens / $30 per million output tokens
  • Terra: ~$2.50 input / $15 output — near-flagship quality at half the cost
  • Luna: ~$1 input / $6 output — unlocking always-on, high-volume use cases that were previously too expensive

For the first time, you’re not choosing between an old model and a new one. You’re choosing between capability tiers — and that changes how you should think about your AI budget entirely.

How This Shows Up in Your Tools

Even if you never touch an API, you’re living inside this pricing matrix. ChatGPT and enterprise tools can route different parts of a task to different tiers — Sol for the complex reasoning, Luna for the surrounding grunt work. SaaS vendors can quietly shift you between Terra and Luna depending on your subscription level, and most users will only notice things feel faster or cheaper tiers suddenly got smarter.

If your organisation’s budget is tied to AI use, ask this specific question: which tier is doing my work, and when does it switch? A contract that just says “GPT-5.6” could hide a 30x swing in cost between the cheapest and most expensive outputs.

The Hidden Cost of Going “Ultra”

The most powerful Sol configurations aren’t just a toggle — they’re orchestration. Ultra-style modes spin up parallel sub-agents, each running their own token meter. That means a single call can cost several times the base Sol price once you factor in multiple agents and long-running tasks.

If you’re budgeting for AI, don’t just track average tokens per request. Look at which tasks escalate into ultra behaviour and treat those as a separate cost centre. The unit prices look fine on a slide — the actual invoice depends on how often your workflows trigger these complex, multi-agent runs.

Why This Matters for Public Sector Organisations

The launch also followed a mandatory 30-day US government review under a new AI cybersecurity executive order — a reminder that AI capabilities are increasingly entangled with geopolitical governance. For public sector teams, that makes it even more important to understand exactly which models are powering your tools, what tier they’re operating at, and what that means for security, cost, and accountability.
