Social Media News

You can now follow hashtags on Instagram

This is brilliant news for marketers as we can now discover people, photos and videos more easily. I also believe it will help us build our community as they become loyal to our own branded hashtags.

Writing on their blog, Instagram said:

“Following a hashtag is just like following a friend. To get started, search for a topic you’re interested in or tap on a hashtag from any post. You’ll see relevant hashtags displayed in your search results along with related accounts.

“When you find a hashtag you like, open the hashtag page and tap on the follow button. You’ll begin seeing top posts from that hashtag in your feed and some of the latest stories in your stories bar. You can always unfollow a hashtag at any time.”

[bctt tweet="Instagram Tip: To find hashtags you might be interested in, check out the hashtags other people follow in their profiles."]

Facebook Messenger for Kids

Messenger Kids allows children to talk, send photos, videos and text messages to friends who are approved by their parents and adult relatives.

The social network said it recognised a “need for a messaging app that lets kids connect with people they love” but "but also has the level of control parents want".

Facebook requires users to be 13 or older to have a profile on its social network and the app is the first targeted at children under that age. It only allows children to use its messaging services, not the entire website.

Once it is installed on a young person’s tablet or smartphone it can be controlled using an adult Facebook account, who must pre-approve who they can talk to.

Once an account has been set up by a parent, children can start a one-on-one or group video chat with parent-approved contacts through a home screen.

Loren Cheng, product management director, said Facebook staff had already been testing the app with their families at home.

She said the tech giant conducted research with “thousands” of parents and spoke to child development and online safety experts. Facebook did not specify how children and parents could prove their relation to each other.

I’m going to test Messenger Kids with my 8-year old son Bobby, and create a podcast, blog post and vlog about it, so stay tuned for that!

Twitter Introduces Threads

Tweetstorms, a series of connected tweets have evolved into Twitter Threads. The new feature announced by Twitter complemented by the 280-character increase will see those of us with lots to say, being able to publish a thread of tweets that combine into longer-form content.

While writing out your tweetstorm, you can go back and edit the tweets at any time as they’re still in draft format. When you’re ready to post, you tap the “Tweet all” button at the top to send the stream to Twitter. Twitter will pace the tweets’ posting a bit so they don’t all hit at once.

In a blog post by product manager Sasank Reddy, Twitter explained its reasoning behind the move.

“We saw this approach (which we call “threading”) as an innovative way to present a train of thought, made up of connected but individual elements.

“But this method of tweeting, while effective and popular, can be tricky for some to create and it’s often tough to read or discover all the tweets in a thread.”

How to create a Twitter Thread

To create a thread using the new feature, type your first tweet and then hit the ‘plus’ button in the lower right-hand corner of the composer.

That brings up a new area within the composer where you’ll have another 280 characters to express yourself.

Repeat the process until your thread is complete, and then hit “tweet,” and the entire thread will post all at once. If you want to update a thread later, open it and hit “add another tweet” in the thread.

Interview | Chris Ducker

JSB & Chris DuckerIn today’s show I interview Chris Ducker, the personal branding entrepreneur who has coined the phrase “Youpreneur”.

Chris has created the Youpreneur Community, Yourprenuer Summit, Youpreneur Round Table Mastermind and his book Rise of the Entrepreneur is due out in 2018. Although I already have a copy!

As you know I attend the inaugural Youpreneur Summit in London. But I caught up with Chris just this week to discuss why this business concept is so important to entrepreneurs like me how build our business based on us, but not reliant on us.

Bur first, let me tell you a story.

Six years ago, I got fired on the Irish version the TV Show, The Apprentice because I “wasn’t scalable”. Bill Cullen (the Irish version of Donald Trump and Lord Sugar) said:

“Joanne, you are a fantastic candidate and if it was the series where we employed the winner, you would have won hands down. However, this series is about investing in a business. Your business is based around you and you are not scalable, so for that reason you’re fired!”

But something niggled at me as I truly believed I could and would build a successful business built around my skills, knowledge, personality and ability to deliver results for my ideal client. This is why I bought my ticket to the Youpreneur Summit and I was not disappointed.

In this interview Chris tells me why he hosted the event and his plans for 2018.

Here is my favourite quote from our interview
