If you’ve bought Twitter followers you might see your follower count plummet!
Do you follow accounts with large follower numbers? Are you confident in these?
Well Twitter is moving to remove fake followers from all Twitter accounts in a move to restore trust in the platform.
On its blog Twitter says:
“Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate.
“Over the years, we’ve locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behaviour. In these situations, we reach out to the owners of the accounts and unless they validate the account and reset their passwords, we keep them locked with no ability to log in.
“This week, we’ll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally. As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down.”
So if you’ve bought Twitter followers, looks like your count is going down and maybe your credibility with it!
WhatsApp tackles its fake news problem following reports of deaths in India
More than 1.8 billion people in 150 countries use WhatsApp for daily communications. However, the Facebook-owned platform is the latest victim of fake news and more than a dozen deaths have been reported in the media following wildfire rumour on the messaging app.
The problem is particularly bad in India where WhatsApp took out full page newspaper ads to advise users of how to combat fake news.
"Together we can fight false information," read full-page advertisements in some top English language-newspapers in India, part of a series that will also feature in regional-language daily titles.
"We are starting an education campaign in India on how to spot fake news and rumours," a WhatsApp spokesman said in a statement.
"Our first step is placing newspaper advertisements in English and Hindi and several other languages. We will build on these efforts."
It urged users to check information before sharing it and cautioned them about the spread of fake news.
They have also launched a research award programme inviting researchers to help them uncover fake news sources. They are offering up to $50,000 for proposals that "foster insights into the impact of technology on contemporary society in this problem space" including election-related content, digital literacy and "detection of problematic behaviour within encrypted systems."
NEW! Group Boards get Pinners excited on Pinterest
This week Pinterest launched several new tools for group boards, designed to streamline communication with group members on shared projects.
The new Group Boards offer what some think are typical social media elements that were perhaps lacking on Pinterest until now including a new activity feed.
Users will be notified when new members join the Group, or when new pins are created. They also come with @mentions and the ability to like comments from other users.
The activity feed, Pinterest says, is “designed both for easily spotting what’s happening on the board as well as having conversations within the board, since all the members will see new pins and comments using the tool.”

In this episode, I’m sharing three business lessons I’ve learned from Joel Comm.
Joel’s book: KaChing: How to Run an Online Business that Pays and Pays – reminded me that the business of digital is a serious game. Not that I needed reminding, but it helped me uncover my value in a world where digital is all around us. Clients and indeed listeners to this podcast tap into my knowledge, experience and creativity to help them on their road of digital transformation. When I read Kaching, I realised that I was saving my clients money and getting them closer to their digital transformation goals, which without me may take years if even happen at all.
2) The value of conversation
I’ve been having podcast conversations with you guys for two years now. On other channels, I’ve been sharing knowledge and best practice for 10 years. Joel says that when you bring value to the conversation you have to trust that, that engagement will pay off. Too often people go in from the kill immediately and want a get rich, go viral overnight success story. Joel reminded me that by having that constant conversation online, people will follow, engage and choose you over others. So, fellow digital marketers, give the gift of value in your next online conversation.
3) A compelling story
How do you tell a story in the Digital Age? Joel sums it up brilliantly when he says: Marketing should tell a story so compelling, others will want to retell it. What’s your story, what tales can you share that add value and others will share?

In today’s JSB’s column I discuss technology, transformation and training, a recipe to survive in the digital age.
Joel’s interview sums up how we must evolve in the Digital Age. Whether you’re a farmer, a doctor a public sector pro or a digital marketer, we are all living through the fourth industrial revolution. Just because my working life is dominated by digital does not mean digital disruption only affects me and my business.
I want to talk about the three T’s in today’s column.
These I believe are the pillars of change that can help us evolve and adapt.
Let’s start with technology. It’s all around us. We are using a smartphone with 250,000 patents. A Smartphone is millions of times faster than NASA's 1960s computers, yet some people are still resisting the technological change claiming it’s not relevant to them.
Let me ask you an honest question. Can you list 10 technologies you use every day?
I bet you think the answer is no but I can assure you it’s yes. From your smartphone to your smartwatch, scanning your badge at work to social networking and tethering to a bluetooth connection, scanning your face at passport control, shopping online, online banking and listening to this podcast.
The list is endless. You are evolving in the Digital Age whether you realise it or now.
Smart technology is all around us and the creators of cars, fridges, smartphones, retail stores and just about anything you can conceive is being disrupted.
So, let’s get real.
Transformation is happening quicker than you can spell it. Let’s step into your workplace for a moment. Are you embracing or rebelling against digital transformation? You should be up off your seat, maybe even standing on your table and asking your office, your department, your organisation – what are we doing to compete, remain relevant and be valuable to our customers and audiences in the Digital Age. Are we meeting their expectations, can they access all information and services from the palm of their hand through their smartphone?
If you answer no, then can somebody knock on the Director’s door and I’ll happily make a phone call for free. This is not a lecture this is a friendly reminder that you either transform or you become obsolete and you and your business or organisation will be disrupted by the disruptor coming down the digital train line to you.
Finally training. The way to overcome fear, digital paralysis and apathy is to step out of your comfort zone and learn new ways of working. Training comes in many forms in today’s connected world – from webinars to think-tanks, elearning and hackathons. It doesn’t really matter how you learn, but make sure you invest in yourself and your organisation.

Social Media Tool of the Week
The social media tool that saved my working week this week is Google Podcasts, how appropriate!
Since January this year, I’ve been waiting for Google Podcasts to roll out globally so I could bring JSB Talks Digital to an even wider audience. So, this week we launched said podcast on the Google podcast network!
I will now be able to reach more Android users and those interested in digital marketing and social media because Google Podcasts will use Google’s recommendation algorithms in an effort to connect people with shows they might enjoy based on their listening habits.
While podcasts have previously been available on Android through Google Play Music and third-party apps, Google says the company “expects Podcasts to bring the form to hundreds of millions of new listeners around the world.”
