AI SIX Podcast Episode 488: The Rise of AI Voice Scams

By

AI voice scams are one of the fastest-growing fraud threats of 2026, and the terrifying part is how convincing they’ve become. In this episode, I explore how voice cloning is being used to impersonate people you trust — and the simple habits that can protect you, your family, and your organisation.

Your Voice Is No Longer Proof of Identity

We’ve always used voice as a shortcut for trust. We recognise people by tone, rhythm, the way they phrase things. But AI voice cloning has broken that assumption — and we need to catch up fast.

This Is Already an Irish Problem

In a survey of 125 financial services compliance professionals in Ireland, seven in ten identified AI-enabled impersonation — including voice cloning, deepfake video and fake identities — as the highest-ranked consumer scam risk for 2026. That’s not a future worry. That’s now.

Brian Hayes of Banking and Payments Federation Ireland told the Oireachtas Finance Committee last December that credit transfer fraud, driven primarily by social engineering including CEO impersonation, is Ireland’s fastest growing fraud category.

How Little They Actually Need

The US Federal Trade Commission has been warning about this since March 2023. Their guidance is stark: a scammer needs just a short audio clip of someone’s voice — and that clip could come from anything posted online.

Think about how much audio you’ve put out there. Podcasts, videos, Instagram stories, TikTok, LinkedIn, webinars. I’ve recorded nearly 500 episodes of this podcast. My voice is everywhere. If yours is anywhere public, you’re in the same position.

The Scam Is Psychology, Not Technology

The clever part of a voice scam isn’t the AI model — it’s the emotional design. The FTC describes family emergency scams where the caller claims to be a child or grandchild in distress who needs money right now. The urgency is the weapon. It’s designed to stop you thinking, because when someone you love sounds frightened, your instinct is to help — not interrogate the audio quality.

What the Research Actually Found

A Harvard-led experiment published in July 2026 surveyed 4,100 US adults on AI voice phishing. Up to 36% said they would or might comply with a relative-in-distress request. Across five scam categories, overall compliance was 16.5%. Some AI voices were rated as comparable to — or occasionally better than — human voices.

What You Can Actually Do About It

  • Don’t trust the voice. Hang up and call the person back using a number you already know is theirs.
  • Set up a family safe word. We have one in our family WhatsApp group — something dull that a cloned voice would never guess.
  • In organisations, separate identity from authority. Sounding like the CEO is not the same as having the authority to move money. Build verification processes that don’t rely on voice alone.
  • Remember: knowing personal details proves nothing. Much of that information is already public.

The Technology Isn’t the Villain

Voice cloning itself isn’t inherently harmful — the FTC’s own voice cloning challenge highlighted its use in helping people who’ve lost their voices through illness or injury. That’s a genuinely good application of the same technology. The tool is neutral. The use of it is not.

If you get a call asking for money, information or urgent action — take a beat. Hang up. Ring back on a number you already have.
