AI Six Podcast Episode 172: The AI-Ready Team: How to Upskill Without Overwhelm

By

Most teams don’t resist AI because they hate technology; they resist it because they don’t know where to start. The result? Missed opportunities, wasted time, and a growing gap between them and the competition. Today, I’m giving you a clear, simple blueprint for building an AI-ready team… without overwhelming them or you.

In this episode, I’m talking about something every leader, manager, and team member should care about: how to get AI skills into your organisation in a way that sticks.

The pace of AI change is relentless, with new tools, new rules, and new use cases almost daily. And the risk is, if you wait until you “have time” to train, you’ll never start.

So I’m going to break down a four-step approach I use with my own clients to help them move from AI-curious to AI-capable.

Why Upskilling in AI Feels Overwhelming

  • Too much noise: constant news stories and tool launches.
  • Unclear relevance: “How does this help my role?”
  • Fear factor: “Will this replace me?”
  • The skills gap: very few have been formally trained in AI, so it feels intimidating.

Key takeaway: The overwhelm isn’t a sign you’re behind; it’s the normal reaction to something this big and fast-moving.

The Four-Step AI-Ready Blueprint

Step 1: Start with Awareness, Not Tools

  • Run a short, engaging session on what AI is, how it’s already in their lives, and the opportunities it creates for your specific industry.
  • Avoid jargon, build curiosity first.

Step 2: Connect AI to Current Workflows

  • Identify tasks your team already does that AI can help with.
  • Use frameworks like TPS (Tasks, Processes, Systems) to map these out.
  • Start small: e.g., drafting first-pass copy, generating quick research summaries.

Step 3: Learn by Doing

  • Give team members one relevant tool to try for a single task.
  • Create 30-minute “sandbox sessions” where people can experiment without pressure.
  • Share wins and challenges in a group forum or meeting.

Step 4: Build on Success

  • Turn early wins into repeatable processes.
  • Nominate “AI Champions” in each team or department.
  • Create a simple AI policy so people know what’s allowed and expected.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

  • Don’t dump 10 new tools on the team at once.
  • Don’t skip the ethics and governance conversation.
  • Don’t assume younger staff will “just know” how to use AI effectively.

Quick Wins You Can Try This Month

  • Use AI to draft meeting summaries.
  • Repurpose content into social posts.
  • Automate routine email responses.
  • Analyse survey data for themes.

You don’t need to make everyone an AI expert overnight.

You just need to create a shared baseline of understanding, link AI to their actual work, and give them a safe space to practice.
