Sam Altman took to the TED stage recently with one clear message: AI isn’t slowing down, it’s speeding up. Today, I’m breaking down his vision for where this is all heading, from digital assistants that act on our behalf to the rise of superintelligence. This is the timeline of AI adoption, what’s happening now, and what’s coming next.
Hello, and welcome back to the AI Six podcast, a daily podcast that teaches you AI in just six minutes, but also keeps you up-to-date on the big news of the week. I do the hard work, so you don’t have to.

2025: AI Becomes Everyday
- Hyper-personal assistants will move from novelty to norm. Think ChatGPT with memory, voice, vision, but built into your phone, work tools, car.
- Public sector adoption will ramp up. Expect more AI-led service chat, document processing, and even case triage in health, social care, policing.
- AI literacy becomes a key agenda item in schools and civil service training. Ireland’s digital literacy push? Just the beginning.
- We’ll also see the first big pushback from unions and professional bodies. “AI-free” pledges might emerge.
2026–2028: Human + AI Collaboration as Default
- AI agents will start acting semi-independently, booking travel, filing taxes, even running basic marketing campaigns.
- You’ll see AI in job descriptions: “Ability to work with AI systems” or “Prompt engineering skills preferred.”
- We’ll see more job displacement in admin, research, customer service, but also an explosion in micro-entrepreneurship and solopreneur AI startups.
- Schools and unis will pilot AI co-teachers or marking assistants. Not without controversy.
- Politicians will start to campaign with AI tools, but also be scrutinised for deepfakes or synthetic media manipulation.
2030: Agentic AI Goes Mainstream
- Most middle-class households will have some kind of home AI concierge, think Alexa but ten times smarter and actually useful.
- Personal health monitoring and early diagnosis will be AI-powered, nudging us towards prevention, not just treatment.
- Digital twins become real, you’ll have a virtual version of yourself that can simulate decisions or try out financial scenarios.
- AI ethics boards and “human in the loop” policies will become legally required in some sectors.
- More jobs will involve “AI shadowing”, people working alongside or supervising AI tools that are doing 70–80% of the task.
2035–2040: The AI-Integrated Society
- AI will become part of national infrastructure, like electricity or broadband.
- You won’t search for information, you’ll delegate tasks to autonomous agents who negotiate, buy, filter, compare.
- Universal Basic Services or UBI pilots may launch in countries where automation has made large-scale job displacement unavoidable.
- AI companions and emotional support bots will raise huge questions about relationships, mental health, and regulation.
- The very idea of “human-only” work may become niche, or luxury.
Big Takeaways
- Gradual curve, not a single flash moment: AI’s power will keep growing exponentially. There won’t be one “AGI moment,” but the impact will still be massive.
- We’ll need new rules and real-time safety: With superintelligence on the horizon, Altman makes an urgent call for governance, safety frameworks, and oversight, fast.
- Prepare for the long game: In the short term, changes may not feel dramatic. But stick around—by 2030, we’ll look back and see how radically AI reshaped our world.
