The UAE Cabinet has approved a landmark decision to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a mandatory subject across all government schools from kindergarten through Grade 12, starting in the upcoming academic year.
Hello and welcome back to the AI Six podcast, where I teach you AI in just six minutes a day, taking away the overwhelm and helping you stay informed and ready to adapt.
I really welcome the AI step forward by the UAE in making AI a mandatory school subject across all grades, from kindergarten through grade 12.
The curriculum will address technical foundations and ethical implications of AI, positioning the UAE as a global leader in AI education. The move is part of the countryโs strategy to prepare students for a rapidly evolving technological world
Personally, I think all countries should follow suit. My own son, almost 16, is taking his junior state examinations in a week and honestly, the job he will be working in by the time heโs ready for the workforce will be AI-driven. Luckily, heโs got his mother to teach him (if heโs interested!)
The curriculum, announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, is designed to give students a deep technical understanding of AI, as well as awareness of its ethical, societal, and practical implications.
The programme is divided into cycles, with content tailored to each age group, and will be taught by designated teachers as part of the Computing, Creative Design, and Innovation subject.
In an X post, Sheikh Mohammed said:

What challenges could teachers face when implementing the new AI curriculum?
Summary Table of Key Challenges
| Technical expertise | Teachers may lack knowledge and confidence in AI concepts and tools |
| Motivation and attitudes | Some teachers are hesitant or unmotivated to adopt AI |
| Resource/access inequality | Unequal access to devices, software, or internet |
| Curriculum alignment | Difficulty integrating AI meaningfully into existing lessons |
| Data privacy and security | Concerns about student data collection and protection |
| Ethical/bias issues | Risks of bias, plagiarism, copyright, and misuse |
| Student overreliance | Potential for diminished critical thinking and independent learning |
| Reduced human interaction | AI may reduce teacher-student social and emotional connections |
| Implementation/maintenance costs | High costs for technology, training, and ongoing support |
| Rapid technological change | Difficulty keeping up with new tools and evolving best practices |
