AI SIX Podcast Episode 500: What 500 episodes of AI SIX taught me

By

500 episodes of AI SIX — and what a journey it has been. Over 20 months, six days a week, I have shown up to track one of the most extraordinary technological shifts in human history. Here are five lessons I learned along the way, and why they matter more than ever right now.

Reaching Episode 500: The AI Story Right Now

The week of this milestone episode, two stories landed that perfectly framed where we are. Greg Brockman, president of OpenAI, declared we have entered the AGI era with the release of ChatGPT-6, model Astra — described as capable of true end-to-end agentic work. Days later, researcher Jacob Coxson resigned from Anthropic, claiming the labs are “racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.” His post got over 2 million views. That contrast — excitement and alarm, side by side — is exactly what AI SIX has been documenting for 500 episodes.

Five Lessons from 500 Episodes

1. Consistency Creates Expertise

You do not need a podcast to build AI literacy. You need a habit. I showed up six days a week, wrote 400,000 words across 499 scripts, and that disciplined repetition built a genuine learning loop. Find 20 to 30 minutes a day and bring AI into what you are already doing.

2. AI Is Communications, Not Coding

Every week I am in training rooms with public sector comms professionals who say “I am not technical, this is not for me.” By the end of the day, they have written the best AI brief in the room — because they already know how to give context, set expectations and define what good looks like. That skill is exactly what the AI era demands. The more capable the model, the more a weak brief will cost you.

3. Tools Become Workflows, Workflows Become Delegation

The value was never in getting a model to do one impressive thing in a workshop. It is in turning a capability into a repeatable part of your work. My own podcast production is a live example — agentic workflow, voice notes, research, scripting, editing, SEO and distribution, with three humans overseeing every stage.

4. Domain Expertise Matters More, Not Less

General AI can produce something plausible at extraordinary speed — and plausible is dangerous without domain expertise. A public sector comms professional knows what is politically sensitive this month, what still needs legal review, which stakeholder cannot be handled like every other. AI cannot know that. Your expertise is the thing that makes AI genuinely useful rather than just fast.

5. Professional Conscience Cannot Be Automated

Before I delegate anything to an AI system, I ask three questions:

  • If it goes wrong, who is harmed — and would I be comfortable telling them a machine made the call?
  • Do I understand the output well enough to spot when it is wrong?
  • Is my name going on this, and am I happy for it to be there?

If you cannot answer all three, you are not delegating. You are abdicating accountability. Human oversight has to be real, not ceremonial.

What Comes Next

I am committing to continuing beyond Episode 500. I want to bring AI SIX into a live room where we can debate this together — so hopefully the next batch of 500 includes an AI SIX live show. Thank you for being part of this journey.
