Column | Are public sector leaders failing public sector marketing pros?

This is a big accusation. I could get cancelled!

Let me start by saying that I respect public sector leadership. I’ve worked closely with many in my career and they choose public service. Many it is a vocation for them and they are lifers.

But as the waves of digital have risen the tides of communications change, I see tensions emerge.

This week I had a social media masterclass with public sector pros and when asked what is your #1 social media challenge, they admitted it was staying up to date with the ever-changing digital media landscape.

So if marketers have this Achilles heel, then it makes sense that senior leaders, whose priorities are vast, may not have the knowledge or understanding to support digital communications transformation.

So it leads me to ask the question: are public sector leaders failing public sector marketing pros by now empowering them to scale digital communications which promotes openness, transparency and accountability.

Consulting |Why senior leaders in my view are failing public sector marketing pros.

  • 1️⃣ Don’t understand digital to manage decision-making
  • 2️⃣ Take personal bias to the boardroom
  • 3️⃣ No or low value on social media
  • 4️⃣ Trying to control communications
  • 5️⃣ Fear-based approach, afraid of public recriminations
  • 6️⃣ Stuck in traditional comms mindset
