Social Media News
Instagram has launched IGTV, a platform which allows videos up to one hour in length, up from the previous one-minute limit. Now a community of one billion people, the social network is really making a statement to YouTube.
But this is the first time that we will have long-form vertical video!
“IGTV is different in a few ways. First, it’s built for how you actually use your phone, so videos are full screen and vertical. Also, unlike on Instagram, videos aren’t limited to one minute. Instead, each video can be up to an hour long.
“We’ve made it simple, too. Just like turning on the TV, IGTV starts playing as soon as you open the app. You don’t have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests. You can swipe up to discover more — switch between “For You,” “Following,” “Popular” and “Continue Watching.” You can also like, comment and send videos to friends in Direct.”
What do you think? Are we ready for vertical video? Will you be an IGTV creator?
Watch the video of Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom (@kevin) introduce IGTV from a live event in San Francisco:
Facebook introduces a paid subscription model for Groups
Well well well, have you heard the latest about Facebook Groups?
Facebook is introducing a paid subscription feature for Group admins so we can charge for exclusive content.
The feature is currently being tested across select Groups in different markets.
Facebook has started letting select Group admins set up a paid subscription for access to special sub-Groups that offer exclusive content to subscribers.
Subscriptions can go from $4.99 up to $29.99 per month.
This is an interesting development. Entrepreneurs have already been charging for Group access so it seems Facebook is making its way.
Twitter launches Twitter Media, a new home for publishers
Twitter has launched Twitter Media, a new home for publishers on the platform.
In a blog post Twitter say:
“Twitter Media, a new website for publishers to learn how to get the most out of Twitter. Twitter Media allows us to scale our team’s work by giving content publishers a resource that’s both inspirational and practical, featuring:
- Best practices from the most successful content publishers across Twitter, curated by Twitter’s news, sports, and entertainment partnerships teams.
- The latest information about new products and features designed specifically for content publishers.
- An easy-to-navigate help section curating answers to the most common questions we get from content publishers every day.”
Interesting move by Twitter, let’s see if it flys!
Interview with Sharon Campbell
In this episode, we go into the Green Room at the Round Room in the Mansion House where the Public Sector Digital Marketing Summit team interviewed Sharon Campbell from Trinity College Dublin.
Sharon presented #TrinityisSocial - it was one of the delegates favourites!

JSB's Column: Join me on stage at Public Sector Digital Marketing Summit 2018!
In today’s JSB’s column I bring you on stage with me at the Public Sector Digital Marketing Summit. In my opening keynote I wanted to set the tone for the day. I outlined why I organised such a massive event, taking a big risk and asking people to take a leap of faith in me.
I also outlined why trust is the #1 currency in the Digital Age and why public sector digital marketing professionals need to defend the truth in the era of fake news.
Social Media Tool of the Week: Ferrite
The social media tool that saved my working week this week is Nearby from LinkedIn.
At the Summit, I asked people to turn on the Nearby feature on LinkedIn so we could all connect with each other.
You need to do this when everyone is actually on their phones and has the LinkedIn app open.
So how does it work?
Find Nearby” uses your device’s Bluetooth to work and “scan” the people around you. Of course, all users would need to activate the feature to be discoverable. Once activated, you can choose to let people nearby discover you, for the next one to three days – or forever – which, in LinkedIn’s terms, means weekdays, 9am-5pm.
